Smeaton is designed to turn detailed onboard activity into a small number of understandable assurance indicators — allowing owners, fleet managers and insurers to identify where performance is strong, where it is changing and where the underlying evidence should be reviewed.

The insurer-facing principle is intentionally simple: do not make a reviewer interpret thousands of scans. Begin with a headline Smeaton Index and five Assurance Signals, then allow drill-down into the rounds, timestamps and exceptions behind them.

A simple measure of how well the round was performed.

The current Safety Score measures individual round execution on a 0–100 basis. Up to 70 points come from physically inspecting required checkpoints and up to 30 points from starting on time.

A genuine reported issue still counts as an inspected checkpoint because the crew member physically attended it.
Each whole minute late removes one start-time point.
After 30 or more minutes late, the start-time component reaches zero.
A completely missed round receives a Safety Score of zero.

A proprietary assurance framework.

The proposed Smeaton Index combines the five Assurance Signals into one 0–100 view. The weighting deliberately gives the greatest importance to whether rounds were executed properly and consistently while still accounting for coverage, hardware condition and crew reliability.

The purpose is not to replace the operational evidence underneath. It is to give a fleet manager or insurance user a concise starting point and show them where to investigate next.

Frequency matters as well as quality.

Two vessels can perform an individual round equally well but still provide materially different levels of assurance if one yacht is physically checked four times each day and the other only once.

The proposed Smeaton Index therefore applies a Round Frequency Factor using the average number of valid completed rounds per day across the rolling 30-day period.
